Canberra is home to the SIEV X Memorial, which is located in Weston Park on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. The memorial is a beautiful yet sombre reminder of the 353 refugees who perished when the vessel carrying them, given the name SIEV X, sank on its way to Christmas Island on 19 October 2001.
To mark the 20th anniversary of this tragedy, Canberra Refugee Action prepared this 7-minute video about the Memorial and the work of a group of volunteers to restore and maintain it for future generations.
