An asylum seeker family in Canberra has been receiving support from Canberra Refugee Support and some of its members for the last couple of years.
At the end of a recent family/CRS members outing, the family concerned gave a cash donation of $250 dollars to CRS. The family indicated that they had kept careful records of every financial contribution ever received from CRS and that they wished to contribute to CRS by paying back ‘every cent’ received.
The church attended by the family encourages tithing 10% of earnings to the church, but the family has decided, for the moment, to tithe 5% to the church and 5% to CRS.
The CRS members receiving the donation indicated that such a substantial contribution was not necessary, especially given the family’s continuing fragile economic circumstances. Nevertheless, the donation was insisted upon – and has been gratefully received by CRS.
All who know about this have been greatly touched, and we wanted to share the story with the wider membership.
