Help to settle into Canberra
CRS is a not-for-profit organisation that introduces local volunteers to refugees and asylum seekers in Canberra. These volunteers act as good neighbours, to help the people they support to settle into life in Canberra and become as independent as possible.
We understand that it can be difficult for people who are living with the uncertainty of a temporary visa, those who are denied the right to work, and newly arrived refugees learning about local systems.
All CRS volunteers that support refugees and asylum seekers hold a Working with Vulnerable People card, which means they have been checked and registered to provide help safely.
CRS volunteers can help with:
- connecting to the community and making friends
- accessing local services and support
- sharing information
- finding cheap food, clothing, furniture and household items
- looking for work or training opportunities
- improving English
- getting children involved in school and other activities
Getting started
If you would like CRS to find some volunteers to support you, we will ask you for some basic information to register with us. We will also ask you to sign an agreement for CRS to share this information to help us find volunteers for you and access support services.
All CRS work is done by volunteers, so please understand if there is sometimes a delay in responding to you.
